Katie of South Potomac, DE is an overwhelmed mom of 3 who’s finding that her Anxiety is preventing her from being the mom she wants to be.  She’s exercises and meditates, but sometimes that just doesn’t cut it to relieve her Anxiety.  So she’s wondering if CBD Oil could help.

Dr. Patel,

I’ve had Anxiety on and off since I was a teenager.  Since becoming a mom, it’s been an ongoing battle to fight the Anxiety.  The responsibilities of running a household leave me stressed-out, anxious, and overwhelmed.  And, it’s just too much to bear.

Some days, the anxiety passes in a matter of minutes or hours. Other times, it’s sort of just there, lurking around for weeks at a time. Even when I have a good few weeks free of Anxiety, I know it’s going to come back and intrude yet again.

I’m also prone to massive Anxiety attacks.  And, I never quite know when these Anxiety attacks are going to happen.

Everything piles up over time and reaches its breaking point.  My heart beats out of its chest.  My legs turn to jelly.  And, the most irrational thoughts race through my mind.  My mind immediately goes to the worse-case scenarios.  And, I can’t stop the thoughts swirling around in my head.  I want to make it go away, but I can’t.

Sometimes, I wake up at 4 in the morning in a panic racing through a mental checklist all the things I have to get done.  I wake up feeling exhausted.  And once I’m up just thinking of the full day of parenting that lies ahead makes me tired.  Sadly, I spend the rest of my day feeling resentful.

Anxiety prevents me from being the mom I want to be.  I can’t be present because I’m completely preoccupied by my thoughts.  Sometimes I find myself being snappy and making everyone around me miserable.  Nobody wants an irritated and agitated mom.   And I certainly don’t want to be an irritated and agitated mom either.  It’s not a burden I want my kids to bear.

I want my children to know that I’m there for them and that I’m understanding.  I want them to know how much I love them.

And, I have deep desire to fix the Anxiety, but prescription medications have never really worked for me.  I exercise and I meditate. Although, sometimes my Anxiety is just too big, too fat, and too ugly for even these activities to help.  I need something more to help me.

So, I’ve been wondering a lot recently about using CBD Oil.  I’ve been scouring the internet and have read that CBD Oil helps anxiety.  Is there any truth to that?  Or is it just more made-up information people have posted?  People are also saying that it doesn’t get them high like Marijuana.  I surely don’t want to parenting while high.

I would be ever so grateful for your answers to these questions.

Although you have the option to use High-CBD Medical Marijuana to get relief for your anxiety, you’re not limited to using just High CBD Medical Marijuana.  There’s also the option of using CBD Oil to help with your Anxiety as well.  And, in fact, between the two options, I’d say the CBD Oil is preferred because it has more of what patients with Anxiety need to get relief – CBD and less of what you don’t need THC.  Specifically, if you use a CBD Oils made with Hemp, which by law has less than 0.3% THC, you’re also mitigating the likelihood of getting high off of the THC.

Ok, let’s talk about what results my patients have experienced when they used CBD Oil for their Anxiety. And, then I’ll focus on why CBD relieves Anxiety.

CBD Oil for Anxiety: The Results

From what patients with Anxiety have reported back to me, CBD works and it works quite well.

Patients have reported that they feel calmer and more relaxed.  They say that CBD eases their Anxiety in a way that allows them to function. They’re no longer left feeling paralyzed by the anxiety.

The racing thoughts they have while lying in bed disappear, allowing them to fall asleep easily, stay asleep for a good 7 to 8 hours, and wake up well-rested.  Being better rested, patients are able to take on the challenges of work with greater focus.

Most importantly, CBD provides relief from anxiety that helps to improve patients’ relationships with their loved ones. They find they are no longer chronically tired, obsessively worried, or snappy, which makes for better quality time spent with family.

And, for those who experience a very severe form of Anxiety – Panic Attacks – report results ranging from total and complete elimination of their Panic Attacks to a reduction in the number of the Panic Attacks they experience to a reduction in the severity of the Panic Attacks where they’re able to ride them out instead of being completely debilitated by them.

Patients also report a range of effects on their use of prescription medications commonly used for Anxiety – such as SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and Benzodiazepines.  Some are able to completely eliminate the use of prescription medications under the supervision of their physician.  Others are able to significantly reduce the dose and/or a number of prescription medications they take.  And, there are a select few who find they have to continue to take their prescription medications, however, they experience greater relief of Anxiety by combing the use of their prescription medications with CBD.

At the same time, patients find that unlike with SSRI’s, CBD doesn’t not take as long to take effect.  Often times, it takes up to 8 weeks to see any changes from SSRI’s.  And more often than not, patients are turned off by Benzodiazepines.  Unlike CBD, Benzodiazepines oftentimes, make patients sleepy and impair motor control and coordination impacting their ability to, for example, drive.  Benzodiazepines are also highly addictive.  And, patients often go through withdrawal when trying to come off of them.

CBD Oil for Anxiety: The Research

Ok.  So, what’s going on that CBD is having such astonishing effects on relieving Anxiety?

There are a couple of schools of thought.

One is that CBD affects the processing of fear in the part of the brain known as the amygdala, which was demonstrated by research published in 2010.  Researchers gave participants some CBD.  Then, they had them look at pictures of fearful faces and measured associated anxiety levels that the participants felt.  At the same time, they looked at what’s going in their brain in real-time with an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).  The effect of CBD on the amygdala essentially reduced the fight-or-flight response.

Being in fight-or-flight mode causes your heart to race, causes shallow and rapid breathing, and to sweat profusely.  Sound familiar?  It’s the same response you have when you’re really anxious.

And, so there you have one of the ways CBD might be relieving Anxiety.

Another school of thought is that CBD may be relieving Anxiety by interacting with the 5-HT1A receptor.  The role of the 5-HT1A receptor in relieving Anxiety has been well-established.  It’s a type of serotonin receptor.  So, CBD interacts with this receptor in a similar way to Abilify (Aripripazole) and Buspar (Buspirone) – commonly prescribed medications used to treat Anxiety.

And, there you have yet another way that CBD might be relieving Anxiety.

Katie, I hope this helps to answer your questions about using CBD Oil for Anxiety.
