How I became the Medical Marijuana Expert

Dr. Patel - The Medical Marijuana ExpertYou’re probably wondering…how the heck I ended up in the field of Medical Marijuana?

So, I started off on what would be considered a typical path for a nerdy Indian kid. I completed my undergraduate studies at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) and then, of course, I went on to become a physician. I completed my medical studies at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Vallejo, CA).

But, I veered off course one sleepless night while aimlessly surfing around on Craigslist.   I stumbled on an ad that said “Medical Marijuana Physician Needed.”

Knowing from first-hand experience that marijuana worked like a charm in resolving insomnia, I read every bit of research in peer-reviewed journals that I could get my hands on. Though the research was limited, it certainly showed promise, especially for conditions such as;

  • Chronic Pain
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Poor Appetite

So, a year later, I packed my bags and headed back across the country to witness the actual results patients were experiencing.  When I showed up to the medical marijuana clinic words cannot describe just how shady this place was. At one point I thought to myself…What have I gotten myself into?!?! But, at that point there was no turning back. And, I’m glad I didn’t either because what I saw blew my mind.

There were patients that came off of highly-addictive daily pharmaceutical drugs for chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia and, instead, were using marijuana only on an as needed basis for these medical conditions.

Patients with epilepsy, who weren’t able to function because of the highly sedative effects of pharmaceutical drugs, now had a sense of normalcy in their lives.

Then, there were patients with Parkinson’s who experienced a reduction in tremors and patients with Multiple Sclerosis who experienced a reduction of spasticity.

The anecdotes are countless.

After about a year and half of working at these mills, which were just churning out medical marijuana cards for patients, I decided to start my own practice in Walnut Creek, CA, so that I could perform my work with a greater level of integrity.
